A backyard garden makes for a perfect location for a writers retreat. In fact this garden was featured for private home garden tours.
This St. Helena writing studio is inspired by the artistic works of Donald Judd, who the client admires for his minimalism in form and bold colors. Translating this into tangible architecture presented a unique and creative opportunity for ChandlerWorkshop to design a space with a significant sculptural element.
Simple in form and function, and this studio has a generous work space, bathroom and kitchenette; all raised up on piers to minimize soil disturbance and the nearby heritage oak. Also a fun design requirement was that this structure needed to be built in two phases, and the plan is to build the two ‘boxes’ off-site and crane them into the yard; again, to minimize disturbance to the garden.
